The Red Microphone’s radical poetry and free improvisation draws on the fervent history of jazz-on-the-edge, the Beat Generation, and New York’s dark downtown underground, sought through post-punk and neo-modernist revolutionary anthems. John Pietaro’s biting, rad spoken word poetry and percussion takes flight through Laurie Towers’ artful, pummeling bass melodies, rhythmic pulsations, and hypnotic contrapuntal lines.
Internationally known free jazz legend Ellen Christi (Butch Morris, William Parker), upon hearing the work of the Red Microphone, offered the duo a collaborative recording project which became Scarlet Streets. Christi used her generations of experience as a vocalist and producer in the improvisational new music scenes of NYC, Rome, and beyond, to shape these sounds and verse into layers of atmospheric, often shattering sound design. Guest musicians include baritone saxophonist Dave Sewelson (Microscopic Septet, John Zorn). The outcome speaks loudly of the downtown arts scene which birthed it.
